- Location: Confirms intrauterine pregnancy (rules out obvious ectopic when visualized)
- Viability: Detects fetal cardiac activity (when expected for gestational age)

How to prepare
- Hydration: Arrive with a comfortably full bladder (drink ~16–24 oz water 45–60 min before; don’t urinate).
- Bring your LMP date and any prior labs/ultrasounds if available.
- You may be asked to empty your bladder before a transvaginal scan for better detail.
