Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Detect Fatty Liver?

How to Prepare for Your Abdominal Ultrasound

Proper preparation can improve visualization of the abdominal organs.

Before Your Appointment

  • Fast for approximately 6–8 hours before your examination

  • Water and routine medications are generally acceptable unless you have been given different medical instructions

  • Avoid chewing gum and carbonated beverages before the examination when possible

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Bring relevant previous ultrasound, CT, MRI, or laboratory results if available

What Happens During an Abdominal Ultrasound?

You will generally lie on an examination table while ultrasound gel is applied to your abdomen.

The sonographer moves an ultrasound transducer over different areas of the abdomen to obtain images of the organs.
